"Who's going to break the news to him?" 😳 Alberto Bettiol thinks he's won the stage... but Andreas Leknessund had already soloed to victory At least Matteo Trentin found it funny 😂 #TourdeSuisse2022 | @MATTEOTRENTIN | @AlbertoBettiol
Today's stage of the Tour de Suisse saw Andreas Leknessund win after a successful breakaway move, however he was not the only rider who raised his arms crossing the line. Alberto Bettiol finished first from the peloton and accidentally celebrated his second spot.
"I didn't know there was still a rider in front. My radio stopped working and I was completely focused on the sprint," he said after having been informed of his second place. The Italian put on an impressive sprint towards the end, however for minor places.
He was unaware at the finish line though, celebrating after crossing - and almost crashing. Between some congratulations there was also some confusion, but eventually Bettiol was informed. "I was very happy to win the sprint against guys like Trentin and Matthews. Tomorrow my friends will laugh with me again," he added.
It would've been an important win for EF Education-EasyPost who are currently in the battle to stay at World Tour level, however Bettiol will have to wait another day to be able to take his first win of the season.
