Antwan Tolhoek (31) spent eight seasons racing at a professional level, racing for prestigious formations Lidl-Trek and Jumbo-Visma. Tolhoek tested positive for anabolic androgenic steroids in November 2023 and was subsequently fired by his new Portuguese team Sabgal / Anicolor in February 2024.
The highlight of Dutch cyclist's career was a stage victory at the 2019 Tour de Suisse where he arrived in front of Egan Bernal who would go on to win the Tour de France later that summer. Despite a number of good results in week-long stage races, the former speedskater was eventually going to step down to continental level in 2024 before he was notified of the adverse finding. Tolhoek will now serve a 4-year ban effective until February 2028.
"The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announces that the UCI Anti-Doping Tribunal has rendered a decision against Dutch rider Antwan Tolhoek," the UCI announced.
"The Tribunal found the rider guilty of an anti-doping rule violation (presence of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids) and imposed a four-year period of ineligibility on the rider.
"In accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the UCI Anti-Doping Rules, the period of ineligibility started on 7 February 2024 and will remain in force until 6 February 2028.
"In line with the Procedural Rules of the Tribunal, the decision will be published on the UCI website. This decision may be appealed before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) within one month."
