Team Visma | Lease a Bike had been constantly aggressive over the first 11 stages of the 2025 Tour de France, looking to put pressure on Tadej Pogacar at any and all opportunities in the hope of wearing out the Slovenian and his teammates at UAE. On stage 12 however, it seemed as if Visma themselves were the ones who had been tired out.
Throughout the day, Visma came to the front of the GC group on numerous occasions to attempt to pressure their rivals. Every time however, the likes of Sepp Kuss, Simon Yates and Matteo Jorgenson were quickly put into difficulty themselves, meaning an immediate slowing of the pace was then required to get back into contact.
On the final climb of the day, UAE then made their own move and through firstly Tim Wellens, and then Jhonatan Narvaez, the whole Visma team, Jonas Vingegaard included were left in the dust.
"I’ve got no excuses for my performance. I simply had a very bad day," admitted Jorgenson honestly in post-stage comments collected by Sporza. "I could feel it right from the start. I had to go all out just to stay near the front on the first climb — which, in hindsight, was a mistake."
"On the final climb, I completely blew up. At that point, I thought it was best to abandon any hopes of the general classification. I wasn’t going to be of any use to Jonas anymore," he added, although Jorgenson admitted he wasn't sure if Vingegaard too was on a bad day, something that would explain the more than two minute deficit to his great rival. "I didn’t speak to Jonas much, so I don’t know whether he was feeling good or not. Tadej was simply the stronger rider. Hats off to them," concludes the American.
