Fire threatens one of cycling’s most emblematic backdrops. The restaurant L'Arbre, located beside the legendary cobbled sector of Carrefour de l'Arbre on the Paris–Roubaix route, suffered a blaze on Monday afternoon that has sparked deep concern among fans and followers of the sport.
According to statements from the venue’s management on their social channels, and in a video shared by Cyclism'Actu, the restaurant was closed when the fire broke out and no one was inside, so there are no reported injuries. However, the full extent of the damage to the building remains unknown.
For cycling fans, L'Arbre’s silhouette is unmistakable. Year after year, television cameras frame this iconic restaurant as riders tackle the final metres of the punishing Carrefour de l'Arbre sector, rated the last five-star stretch of Paris–Roubaix and one of the race’s decisive points.
The news has caused shock across the cycling community, as this establishment is woven into the collective memory of the Hell of the North. Its possible loss would mean the disappearance of one of the most recognisable symbols of the French Monument.
The restaurant’s owners publicly thanked the massive wave of solidarity after the incident. "We are deeply moved by the messages of support, encouragement, and solidarity we have received since our restaurant was struck by the fire," they said in a statement posted on Facebook.
"In these difficult times, your support brings us great comfort. We will keep you informed about how the situation evolves as soon as we have new information," they added. While awaiting a final assessment of the damage, the cycling world is watching closely the fate of one of its most storied corners.
