Geraint Thomas came into the Tour de Suisse in a supporting role, at best co-leader alongside Daniel Martínez and Adam Yates. However in the space of a week much has happened, and the INEOS veteran is very close to winning the Swiss race after a season that has until this month been very disappointing.
As Yates abandoned with Covid-19, and Martínez struggled with form throughout the week, the 36-year old rode a tremendous race with a lot of consistency in the hilly stages, and within sight of the best at all times in the mountains. He finished today's summit finish in Malbun in fifth place and secured his second place in the GC. “We expected a lot of attacks from Sergio Higuita and his team, but Daniel Felipe Martínez was incredible, as was the whole team," Thomas said after the stage.
INEOS controlled most of the climb, however there was no direct response when Sergio Higuita attacked in the final kilometers. Thomas stayed in the wheel of race leader Jakob Fuglsang, and made his move in the final kilometer. "I went after Higuita, but I did not calculate correctly the last few hundred meters. We made a great effort, but I feel fine. The form is good and I have worked hard to get here well. Now I'm in good shape for the time trial, but everything is still on the table," he added.
The Welsh sits only two seconds behind the Colombian climber, and judging by past performances, he's got the clear advantage to conquering the overall classification. He won the Tour de Romandie last year, however excluding that result his last stage-race win had been at the Tour de France four years ago. With this performance, not only is his spot at the Grand Boucle secured - if nothing unusual happens - but he will also be on a protected role.
