Ethan Vernon converted control into victory on Stage 4 of the Volta a Catalunya, with NSN Cycling Team timing their sprint to perfection on a day that offered little beyond a long, controlled run-in and a tense uphill finish.
After missing earlier opportunities through a puncture and a misjudged run-in, Vernon and his team delivered when it mattered, executing a clean plan into the decisive final kilometre. “Everything came together today, so I’m super happy to win,” the Brit said after the finish to Cycling Pro Net.

Roundabout timing proves decisive

The key moment came approaching the final roundabout, where positioning dictated the outcome on a finish that left little room for late moves. “We knew we had to go in there first, and then position probably wouldn’t change,” Vernon explained.
That responsibility fell to his lead-out, with the final approach arriving slightly earlier than planned but still perfectly judged. “Jake Stewart did an amazing job. He was on the front a bit earlier than we’d planned, so I was a bit worried he was going to leave me too early, but in the end he was super strong today and dropped me off straight into the roundabout.”
From there, the sprint unfolded exactly as expected. With the road rising and the headwind discouraging long-range launches, Vernon held his position and delivered a controlled acceleration to the line ahead of Dorian Godon and Tom Pidcock.

From frustration to execution

The result marked a turnaround after a disrupted start to the race for Vernon, who had already seen one clear chance slip away. “We missed the first opportunity with a puncture with 8k to go, which was really frustrating, and then yesterday we made some mistakes in the roundabout.”
Those setbacks fed into a sharper approach on Stage 4, with the team arriving at the finale with a clear objective and the intent to deliver. “I think we were fired up.”
That edge showed in the final kilometre, where Vernon’s positioning and patience allowed him to avoid the chaos behind and focus solely on holding the front.

Win secured, tougher test ahead

While the stage itself unfolded at a controlled tempo for much of the day, the finale still demanded precision, particularly on the slightly rising run to the line.
Vernon admitted the effort took its toll, with little time to recover before a very different challenge awaits. “It’s a hard couple of days now. I live close to where it starts tomorrow in Andorra, so I know the climb that’s coming straight away, and I’m a bit worried.”
For now, though, the execution mattered more than what comes next.
With a clean sprint finally delivered after earlier frustrations, Vernon leaves Stage 4 with both the result and the confirmation that the approach is working when it counts.
