Team DSM have came to the
Volta a Catalunya with a very young team without any real ambitions of targeting the overall classification or stage wins. However, one of their new riders,
Jonas Iversby, has shown himself to the cycling world yesterday after taking hold of the race lead.
The Norwegian was part of the late breakaway on stage one in the windy stage into Sant Feliu de Guíxols where he grabbed six seconds of bonifications which put him in third place at the end of the day. With another six seconds available at stage two, Iversby got himself in the breakaway once again, took the time he ambitioned and then survived the crashes and echelons that split the peloton late in the day to pull on the leader's jersey at the end of the day. With Michael Matthews not reeling in any time at the finish, Iversby became the new race leader, aswell as the youth classification leader. The points and mountain's classification also came along with his breakaway prowess.
“It was another good day for me and the team here in
Catalunya. We knew there was a
chance I could take the GC jersey but we also didn’t know how other teams would
react to it. I made quite a small break which then I knew I had a chance. We
didn’t go too hard and I was able to save my legs and take the sprints I needed
for the seconds," Hvideberg said yesterday at the finish, after unexpectedly pulling in not only the race lead due to bonifications obtained in two breakaways on the two opening stages, but also every other classification in the race.
It’s an amazing day for me and the
team and it shows that we’re here in a good way, and we can enjoy the last five
days of racing. Tomorrow [today's stage to La Molina] I’ll just try and enjoy the experience of being in the
leaders jersey and everything around it," he concluded. Iversby is not expected to keep the lead of the overall classification today, however the KOM classification may remain an objective for the remainder of the race. Whatever happens, it has already been a wildly successful week for the young Norwegian rider.
