Matej Mohoric is a descending demon and on stage 2 of the Volta a Comunitat Valenciana he put on another immpressive display. Only this time around, the Bahrain - Victorious soared to victory in the Spanish race.
After the breakaway's success on stage 1, plenty riders dreamt of their chances in the second day of racing in Spain and a decently strong breakaway of seven riders soon marked the day. Gorka Sorarrain, Sébastien van Poppel,Txomin Juaristi, Eugenio Sánchez, Sinuhé Fernandez, Johan Meens and José Maria García were part of the action.
VF Group - Bardiani CSF - Faizané were keen on keeping their race lead and so they did not let the gap grow much, unlike the day before. Hence the peloton had a much easier time controlling the front group today, with a few difficulties towards the end set to mark the day.
With 16 kilometers to go the peloton caught up with the breakaway, and shortly after the main favourite for the day Jonathan Milan suffered a puncture. This changed the outlook on the finale. Team Jayco AlUla picked up the head of the peloton to try and control the group into a sprint with Michael Matthews, but other teams had different ideas.
The likes of Oier Lazkano and Felix Grossschartner launched attacks within the slight ascent which summited only with 10.5 kilometers to go. The kilometers after the summit saw a few attacks but none moving away from the peloton, until Matej Mohoric launched himself downhill with just over 6 kilometers to go.
Just as he did yesterday, he gained a big gap to the peloton. However this time around the finale was significantly closer, and the Slovenian held off the peloton to take a victory in traditional style. He crossed the line alone, with the peloton arriving a few seconds behind led by Polti Kometa's Giovanni Lonardi; with Simone Consonni finishing third.
