Just a few days after questions emerged about his condition following an underwhelming time trial, Jonas Vingegaard delivered a devastating response in the mountains of the Giro d’Italia. The Danish rider attacked with authority on the final climb to Pila, won the stage in commanding fashion and claimed the Maglia Rosa after one of the most controlled team performances of the race so far.
From the very start, Team Visma | Lease a Bike made their intentions obvious. The Dutch squad wanted the stage victory, but above all they wanted to remove Afonso Eulálio from the race lead. Despite the fierce pace set on the Saint-Barthélémy climb, a large breakaway group still managed to go clear early in the stage.

Van der Lee shines in the breakaway battle

The day’s escape quickly became a chaotic affair. Jardi van der Lee and Jan Christen emerged as the strongest pair on the climbs, with the Swiss rider doing most of the work in the hunt for mountain points. Yet Van der Lee timed his effort perfectly to edge past Christen at the summit and take the valuable points for the mountains classification.
Soon the front group expanded again, with major names joining the move, including Giulio Ciccone, Enric Mas, Einer Rubio and Aleksandr Vlasov. The presence of several dangerous climbers forced Team Visma | Lease a Bike to maintain relentless pressure behind.
While the breakaway fought for mountain points, the battle for the purple points jersey also intensified. Jhonnatan Narváez from UAE Team Emirates - XRG collected enough intermediate sprint points to move into the lead of that classification, despite resistance from Gianmarco Garofoli.

Visma tightens the grip before the decisive climb

The race never truly escaped Visma’s control. Riders such as Tim Rex and later Bart Lemmen kept the gap within reach, ensuring the breakaway never enjoyed complete freedom. As the climbing intensified, the leading group began to fragment under repeated accelerations from Uno-X Mobility and Lidl-Trek.
Giulio Ciccone looked particularly aggressive throughout the stage, repeatedly attacking for mountain points and dropping rivals on successive climbs. Van der Lee continued to fight bravely, but eventually the effort caught up with him as the pace increased before the final ascent.
Behind them, the peloton was already showing signs of damage. Young Italian talent Giulio Pellizzari drifted backwards, while race leader Afonso Eulálio also began to struggle under the severe tempo set by Visma’s mountain train.

Vingegaard delivers the knockout blow

The decisive moment arrived with 4.7 kilometres remaining on the climb to Pila. After strong work from Sepp Kuss and Davide Piganzoli, Jonas Vingegaard launched the attack everyone had been expecting. None of the overall contenders could respond.
Felix Gall initially limited his losses better than the others, but even he steadily drifted backwards as Vingegaard climbed with remarkable consistency. Thymen Arensman suffered more heavily and lost contact with a chasing group containing Bora leaders Jai Hindley and Pellizzari.
At the front, Vingegaard never showed the slightest hint of weakness. The Dane powered to the stage victory and silenced any lingering doubts about his condition after a dominant display from both himself and his team. By the finish line in Pila, he had not only won the stage but also taken firm control of the Giro d’Italia.

Visma crushes Pila as Vingegaard takes pink, Eulálio continues to impress

Carlos Silva from CiclismoAtual gives his verdict on a dramatic Stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia 2026, where Jonas Vingegaard stormed into the race lead after a dominant display from Visma.
Team Visma | Lease a Bike delivered a flawless performance on the road to Pila and effectively handed victory to their leader Jonas Vingegaard, who now takes over the race lead. The Dutch squad controlled the stage with authority, turning the final climb into a brutal selection test under the relentless pace set by a train orchestrated by Sepp Kuss.
Afonso Eulálio eventually paid the price for the sheer brutality of the stage, but the young Portuguese rider resisted for as long as he possibly could against the infernal tempo imposed by Visma. He loses the pink jersey and now sits second overall, while still holding onto the white jersey as the best young rider. Considering that just two years ago he was racing in the Continental ranks, Eulálio continues to establish himself as one of the revelations and brightest stars of this Giro.
Another rider who surrendered a jersey today was Paul Magnier. The Maglia Ciclamino now belongs to Jhonatan Narváez, opening the door to what could become an unexpected and fascinating battle for the points classification. It adds yet another tactical layer to this race.
Magnier will still have opportunities to fight back, particularly with tomorrow’s finish into Milano and the final stage in Rome, two chances where the Soudal - Quick-Step sprinter can target stage victories and collect points. But Narváez may choose a completely different route, attacking from breakaways and hunting intermediate sprints during a final week packed with climbing, terrain that will make it extremely difficult for Magnier to limit his losses.
The breakaway itself was another fascinating element of the day, featuring three riders from UAE Team Emirates - XRG and four from Movistar Team. None of those teams would ultimately gain much from the move, especially the Spanish outfit. Giulio Ciccone was arguably the most aggressive rider on the stage, constantly attacking and refusing to settle. The Italian looks hungry for a stage victory and is clearly riding with intent as the race h eads deeper into the mountains.

Visma’s masterclass leaves Vingegaard firmly in control of the Giro

CyclingUpToDate journalist Ruben Silva analyses a decisive Stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia 2026, where Team Visma | Lease a Bike finally revealed their full strength in the mountains and Jonas Vingegaard stormed into the race lead after a commanding display on the climb to Pila.
Usually the most tactical stages are the ones that deserve the deepest analysis, but today’s stage offered very little ambiguity. The script had been written from kilometer zero and Team Visma | Lease a Bike executed it to perfection. Their objective was clear from the start: win the stage, take the pink jersey and inflict the maximum possible damage on their rivals. Every rider played his role exactly as planned, and without a single mistake.
The Visma squad that had raced conservatively until now finally unleashed its full strength on the first real Alpine test. Jonas Vingegaard delivered exactly what everyone expected. The Dane simply looks a level above the rest of the climbers in this race and once again stamped his authority on the Giro. Tactically, however, there was little mystery to the day. The plan was straightforward, brutally effective and, ultimately, impossible to counter.
The breakaway featured many of the race’s best climbers searching for a prestigious stage victory, but it was never truly about legs. Visma never allowed the move enough freedom and carefully preserved enough domestiques to unleash a devastating pace on the final ascent.
Afonso Eulálio saw his remarkable spell in pink come to an end, but the Portuguese rider still leaves the stage in an excellent position. He remains second overall, continues in the white jersey and still has a realistic shot at a Top 10 finish. Importantly, he did not collapse or show signs of a major crisis. Finishing 15th, with several breakaway riders ahead, was more or less what could realistically be expected from the Bahrain Victorious rider on such a demanding climb.
The battle for the podium also intensified, with Felix Gall once again gaining ground on Thymen Arensman. The time gaps between the main contenders remain relatively small and, should the rivals decide to stop focusing solely on Visma during the final week, the race for the podium could become genuinely fascinating.
Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe also had plenty of reasons for optimism. Both Jai Hindley and Giulio Pellizzari looked extremely strong and they are now in a position where attacking will be essential if they want to move ahead of Gall and Arensman. At this point, they may be the riders most capable of injecting fresh life into the general classification battle.
Another standout performance came from Davide Piganzoli. His ride was extraordinary and also represents a major positive sign for Visma, a team that lacked the financial resources to sign major stars during the winter but may once again have uncovered a genuine gem. Piganzoli’s level appears to be rising dramatically since stepping into a more professional environment.

Vingegaard takes control of the Giro after Visma’s ruthless display

Our colleague Jorge Borreguero from CiclismoAlDia reflects on a memorable stage, where Jonas Vingegaard claimed his third stage victory of the race and, more importantly, took over the Maglia Rosa for the first time in this Giro.
Stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia delivered one of those days that will be remembered for a long time. Jonas Vingegaard secured what was arguably his most important stage victory yet, not only because it marked his third win of the race, but because it finally propelled him into the overall lead. More significantly, it now feels increasingly unlikely that the Dane will surrender the pink jersey before reaching Rome.
The finale on the climb to Pila confirmed what had already been hinted at on the previous mountain stages. Team Visma | Lease a Bike controlled the race with a relentless but calculated approach, gradually tightening the grip on the peloton before delivering the decisive blow. Once Vingegaard accelerated, there was simply no room left for any response.
For Movistar Team, however, the stage leaves mixed feelings. The presence of both Enric Mas and Einer Rubio in the breakaway showed genuine ambition rather than mere damage limitation. They placed themselves in the right move on a stage perfectly suited to pure climbers and looked capable of fighting for a major result deep into the finale.
Yet Visma ultimately destroyed those hopes, particularly when Rubio appeared to be building momentum towards a possible stage victory before the Dutch squad raised the pace once again.
The role of Giulio Ciccone was also crucial in shaping the day’s outcome. The Italian tried repeatedly to animate the race before the final ascent and was among the riders most willing to attack from distance. But like so many others on the road to Pila, he too was left frustrated by a Visma team that simply looked untouchable.

Visma’s dominance changes the complexion of the Giro heading into the final week

What happened on the road to Pila felt like a turning point rather than just another mountain stage. Team Visma | Lease a Bike did not simply win the day, they imposed a hierarchy on the race. Jonas Vingegaard now carries the aura of a rider fully in control of the Giro, both physically and mentally, while many of his rivals are beginning to look like they are racing for the podium rather than for victory itself.
Still, the final week should not lack drama. Riders such as Giulio Ciccone, Jai Hindley and Felix Gall have shown enough aggression and climbing form to keep the race alive behind the Maglia Rosa. And while Afonso Eulálio may have lost pink, the young Portuguese rider leaves Pila with his reputation enormously strengthened after standing up to the strongest mountain train in the race.
