Au sprint, Paul Penhoët, 20 ans et membre de la Conti, décroche une belle cinquième place sur la première étape du Tour d'Oman. Fernando Gaviria s'impose devant Mark Cavendish.
As Fernando Gaviria surged to the win of today's stage of the Tour of Oman, very few eyes were layed on who was behind (specially as the footage from the finish was far from good), however when taking a closer look there will be someone who will be rather happy with his result.
At only 20 years of age and riding for Equipe continentale Groupama-FDJ, youngster Paul Penhoët was selected to ride the Tour of Oman for the Elite team, and didn't take long to impress as he finished the opening stage in fifth place, behind only Gaviria himself, Mark Cavendish, Kaden Groves and Amaury Capiot.
This being the start of his third year in the development squad, the French sprinter is already possibly gaining points on a future contract later this year. He's won the Tour d'Eure-et-Loir last year alongside a stage, aswell as another at the L'Etoile d'Or, both on bunch sprints, and showed his face outside of the French calendar by finishing in eighth place at the under-23 world championships last season in Leuven.
