#Giro What a stage for our @davideformolo 🇮🇹, great fighting spirit and a solid third place for him in Potenza. 🥉 Bravo Roccia👏 #UAETeamEmirates #WeAreUAE
It is no surprise that UAE Team Emirates came with a team that had several riders focused on stage wins at the Giro d'Italia, which is why several of the team's riders attacked early on in the day to get in stage seven's breakaway - which ended up proving successful. Davide Formolo made it into the winning move, and almost turned it into a win.
The Italian was aggressive from early on, and eventually found himself in the group of seven riders that led the stage throughout most of it's course. "Today was a day for the breakaway and we decided I would try," he said in a post-race interview. Carrying good form and with a day well suited to his characteristics, Formolo dealt several attacks in the hilly finale to Potenza to try and grab his second Giro d'Italia win, but it wasn't meant to be.
"In the final I tried to get away on the climb, I tried again on the descent but it just wasn’t to be. Jumbo had two strong guys there and it made it hard to get away solo," he added. Formolo ended up not having the legs to drop the group of Dutch riders who kept up with him on the uphill, and sprinted to third place in the end.
"It’s always nice get the win of course, but I can say I tried my best. We take this result and go for it again tomorrow with Gaviria, but tomorrow I’ll probably stay in the bunch after a long day today," he concluded. With João Almeida the priority within the team in the mountainous stages, it's unsure if Formolo will have more opportunities to go for the wins, however he's confirmed to have the legs to contest.
