Cyrille Guimard’s take on Paul Seixas’s presence at the 2026 Tour de France leaves little doubt about his stance. The veteran French directeur sportif believes that, beyond the young rider’s talent, the real debate is about context and how to manage his progression.
Far from being surprised by the announcement, Guimard stresses that the rider’s participation was an open secret within the pro peloton: "We’ve known for a long time that Paul Seixas would ride the Tour de France," he says in an interview with Cyclisme'Actu, recalling that several authoritative voices had already flagged this scenario in recent months.
However, his reflection goes further than the predictability of the news. The Frenchman raises a fundamental question about how athletic careers are built. "I’m more interested in a long-term plan for someone so precocious, rather than saying: 'Let’s try to grab the easy stuff right away,'" he notes, stressing the importance of not rushing young riders.
Guimard also highlights the demands of a race like the Tour. In that sense, he leaves open the question of Seixas’s own competitive approach: "Should a rider of his calibre start the Tour thinking, 'We’ll see what happens,' or should he follow the example of all the great champions?" he asks, underlining doubts about the right strategy for his debut.

Pressure, a decisive factor

One of the aspects that most concerns the former French national coach is the media spotlight surrounding the rider. In his view, Seixas is already subject to unusual exposure for his age. "Today, we can even consider him above other major sports stars in terms of media pressure," he argues, warning of the risks this can entail.
Along these lines, he insists that the rider’s youth adds a layer of vulnerability: "At that age, you’re still psychologically fragile, and he will have to learn how to process all this," he explains, making it clear the challenge won’t be purely sporting.
Guimard also points to structural elements behind the decision. Without going into specifics, he suggests that the choice to include Seixas reflects a blend of sporting and strategic interests within his team, Decathlon CMA CGM.
"The team cannot be absent from the Tour," he states, hinting that without Seixas at the Tour, the French team which looks to settle as a leading WorldTour squad alongside UAE, Visma or Red Bull might not find the necessary exposure. Especially with other possible star rider option, sprinter Olav Kooij, out of action since the start of 2026.
Despite his criticism, Guimard does not question the rider’s potential. His concern lies in a broader perspective, focused on Seixas’s long-term development: "It’s not his potential that’s in doubt. It’s about what Paul Seixas will look like at 25, 28, or 35," he reflects.
With that idea, the Frenchman sums up his position: the talent is undeniable, but the real challenge will be to manage his development properly in a high-pressure environment. The 2026 Tour thus looms not only as an opportunity, but also as a balancing act between ambition and prudence.
