With the time gap to the peloton already dropping below the one minute mark though, their hopes of holding on for victory looked slim. As it turned out, with 35km to go they were caught. Although there were no big attacks on the penultimate climb of the day, the steady pace at the front of the peloton did thin things out considerably.
On the final ascent of the Gourdon, Andrea Vendrame quickly went out on the attack. With 8km to go though, the Italian had already been reeled back in by the EF-led peloton.
The next big move came from
Santiago Buitrago inside the final 7km, although Richard Carapaz was quickly on the wheel of his fellow South American, dragging
Lenny Martinez and
Cristian Scaroni clear with him. As Buitrago continued to stamp on the gas though, Carapaz himself was soon in trouble. Despite Scaroni being outnumbered by the Bahrain - Victorious duo of Martinez and Buitrago, the Astana man was content to roll through and work with his companions in the lead group.
The trio stayed together right until the line as well and despite being outnumbered, it was Scaroni who led from the front, holding off the power of Buitrago to take his second win in as many days.
