After a team time trial that already opened the first gaps among the main contenders, the Tour de France tackles on Sunday a second stage that promises to be far more decisive than its profile suggests.
The 168.5-kilometre route between Tarragona and Barcelona has a clear Classics flavour and could trigger the first major moves among the yellow jersey hopefuls, as they contend with versatile challengers.
One analyst that is convinced the day is tougher than it looks is Alberto Contador. The Madrilenian believes the Montjuïc finale can create splits among the general classification candidates and warns that not everyone will emerge unscathed.
“Here comes stage 2 of the Tour de France between Tarragona and Barcelona, a stage for the general classification riders. Why? Because there’s a sting in the tail. That circuit of just over 12 kilometres with the climb to Montjuïc Castle.
"1.8 kilometres at an average of 9% with ramps up to 13%. Surely when someone has a go, there will be a GC rider who loses time; we’ll see who comes out on top,” analysed the two-time Tour winner for Eurosport.

An ideal terrain for Pogacar

After an opening section that is practically flat, where a breakaway is likely to seize the spotlight, the race will change completely on entering Barcelona.
The peloton will first tackle the Coll de Begues, the first categorised climb of the 2026 Tour de France, before reaching the demanding Montjuïc city circuit. That’s where the real show begins for many cuycling fans expecting to see a battle.
Riders must complete three laps of an explosive loop that includes the ascent to Montjuïc Castle and the taxing drag along Avinguda del Paral·lel before the finish next to the Olympic Stadium. It’s a different layout to the usual Volta a Catalunya finale and far more favourable for the most explosive riders to make a difference.

Stage 2: Tarragona - Barcelona, 168.5 kilometres
All of this makes the day a perfect stage for Tadej Pogacar in his pursuit of Jonas Vingegaard's yellow jersey. The Slovenian already showed in the team time trial that he is in top form, and this kind of finish suits him perfectly.
If he can prise a few seconds from Vingegaard, he could even pull on yellow barely 24 hours after yielding the lead to the Dane. We’ll see, because the Visma rider looked very strong. It will also be worth watching what Juan Ayuso, in white, can do.
