At the Memorial Rik Van Steenbergen Mark Cavendish was in contention for the win in a pro race for the first time since the national championships, but he was disappointed not to take the win in what was his final day in the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team equipment.
“I am disappointed not to win my last race with Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, but I am proud of the boys and of the way we raced," the Manxman said after finishing the Belgian semi-classic. "They were strong today, really committed and gave me a good lead-out. I wanted to take the victory also for them, but it wasn’t possible."
Cavendish was one of the few world-class sprinters taking part in the race, which has sealed the season for many in the European calendar. He had gone through a bad patch of form since not having been selected to the Tour de France, but was near the front and the win during yesterday's expected bunch sprint. He came close, but was beaten by his substitute Tim Merlier, who will take a leading position inside Quick-Step from next season on onwards.
“It’s an emotional day, but on the other hand I’m happy my career is over and I’m ready for a new chapter as this chapter definitely was long enough. I didn’t have a super season this year, so that’s why I’m quite ok with saying goodbye," he concluded.
