It's a tough blow for British cycling fans, as 21-year-old
Lukas Nerurkar has suffered a broken jaw and concussion following a crash at Trofeo
Laigueglia. The
EF Education-EasyPost rider was forced to abandon the race on
Wednesday after the incident, and now hospital checks have confirmed he will
have to spend some time on the side lines.
Nerurkar, a former Trinity Racing talent, had shown his
potential last season, securing third place on Stage 3 of the 2024 Critérium du
Dauphiné. He, and his team, were undoubtedly hoping he could kick on with some
more strong results in 2025.
The crash occurred with just under 70 kilometres to go in
the 190.7km one day race, as Nerurkar was at the front of the peloton, setting
the pace in pursuit of the breakaway.
Providing a medical update on social media, EF
Education-EasyPost confirmed, “He has been discharged from the hospital and
will travel back to Girona where he will undergo surgery in the next few
days."
Nerurkar, whose father Richard Nerurkar is a British Olympic
marathon runner, now faces a recovery period as he looks to return to racing
later in the season. Hopefully he will be back in the peloton, ahead of the big
races in the summer.
