Hoping to deny the sprinters from the breakaway was a small group of just two riders, Nickolas Zukowsky (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) and local rider Michael Schär (AG2R Citroën Team).
At the intermediate sprint, bonus seconds were on offer. With the breakaway taking the 6 and 4 on offer, Remco Evenepoel attacked off the front of the peloton to claim the final bonus second on offer.
With just over 30km to go, a big crash rocked the peloton with numerous riders including Kaden Groves and Koen Bouwman going down.
The breakaway was caught with 28km to go and the counter-attacks began off the front of the peloton.
With none of those attacks really being able to put the peloton into any difficulty, the sprint trains began to prepare themselves.
All the GC riders were safely through the 3km to go banner. In the finale, it was
Wout van Aert who launched first but Biniam Girmay was on another level, powering to a brilliant victory.
