Seventh place for @luke_lamperti in a hard edition of #KBK24 - best result of an American since 2011 at this race 🙌
It's fair to say that Soudal - Quick-Step didn't enjoy the best of Opening Weekends to kick-off the 2024 Classics season. One bright light however, was Luke Lamperti's performance at Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne.
The prodigiously talented 21-year-old American has been a star of the early portion of 2024, notably impressing at the Tour of Oman alongside fellow top prospect at Soudal - Quick-Step, Paul Magnier. “There’s a lot to learn. For sure the level was high and it only gets higher,” Lamperti told Velo after finishing best in his team at the Belgian one-day race in 7th, 1:23 down on the eventual winner, Wout van Aert. “Everybody is pushing the limit more and more every season.”
"I felt OK for the sprint. We had Yves Lampaert first wheel and I was maybe third in the final corner,” Lamperti said, finishing fourth out of the bunch led home by Christophe Laporte. “When I opened up I hit the wind, in what I felt was quite late but was quite early when you get out with the headwind. I was really suffering. I can be happy. Of course, as a team we came to ride for the win."
As mentioned, Lamperti's performance was something of a lone bright light for Soudal - Quick-Step this weekend. Nevertheless, the American is confident the team can make more of an impact during the year. “To have the support from the guys for the sprint was really nice. For me it’s a good start to the classics season. We didn’t have the best weekend we could hope for. We can build on it for the coming races. As we move forward in the season we can definitely build on this,” he concludes.
