Lorena Wiebes must've be saddened when she learnt that neither of this year's road Championships fit her ridertype and thus the fastest woman in peloton will have to make a do with "just" the Dutch national champion's tricolor. Regardless, she might hold onto two rainbow jerseys by the end of this month!
But Wiebes was still looking to enlargen her collection of special jerseys which led her steps to the Gravel
World Championships where, after some controversy, the Dutchwoman dominated a reduced sprint to secure this off-road rainbow jersey. However that's not a first rainbow jersey for Wiebes!
Unlike her teammate Lotte Kopecky, Wiebes is not celebrated as a world-class track cyclist with massive palmares. But with her excellent speed, the 26-year-old eventually found her path to the indoor discipline last season, finishing 2nd in Scratch Race in her European Championships debut. And her first start at World Championships went even better when Wiebes took the Scratch rainbow stripes in front of Jennifer Valente and Ally Wollaston.
While men's segment of Dutch track team can lean back on the superstar sprinter Harrie Lavreysen, women's side is looking for their leader after the retirement of Kirsten Wild. That also means multiple selection spots available... and Wiebes will take up three for herself!
Representing the Netherlands again in her fine discipline Scratch Race, but also in Omnium and Madison where she will start alongside Lisa van Belle, Wiebes will have a busy schedule at the 2025 Track World Championships in Santiago, Chile.
The Netherlands announced their selections for the Track Worlds this week, with Wiebes and Van Belle leading the women's endurance contingent, whilst Hetty van de Wouw, Steffie van der Peet and Kimberley Kalee head the sprint team.
Schedule of Lorena Wiebes' races in Chile:
- October 22, Women's Scratch Race
- October 24, Women's Omnium
- October 25, Women's Madison
