VIDEO: The mistake that cost Victor Koretzky Olympic mountain bike gold in thrilling battle with Tom Pidcock

Victor Koretzky came so close, so very, very close to giving France a pair of Olympic mountain bike gold medals but after a thrilling battle with Great Britain's Tom Pidcock, Koretzky was forced to settle for silver.

After Pidcock had fought back from a puncture and near 40 second time loss to get back in contact with Koretzky, the pair were embroiled in an enthralling fight over the final lap with momentum swinging this way and then that. With Pidcock unable to distance Koretzky with a pair of attacks, the Frenchman fired off up the course with a brutal acceleration of his own.

From there, it seemed as if there would be no denying Koretzky a famous gold medal win but seemingly out of nowhere, the cameras then cut to Pidcock back on the front. Whilst not initially captured by TV cameras, fan footage has now revealed exactly what happened to Koretzky, with the Frenchman himself even touching on the mistake he made in his post-race interview.

"I made a small mistake on the descent. The bike hit gravel. That mistake costs me gold," Koretzky admitted, also touching upon the daredevil, last gasp attack from Pidcock that almost saw Koretzky crash and drop completely out of the medals. "In the woods, Pidcock touches me and clips out my shoe. It was hard to do something but Tom is a great champion."
