The Cyclocross World Cup began today in Tabor and the winner was not a surprise in the women's field.
Lucinda Brand has thus far been dominating the women's field and she has done so once again, beating Crelan duo
Sara Casasola and
Inge van der Heijden.
The race started off with Marie Schreiber taking the holeshot but slowly fading away in the field, withdrawing from the race a few laps in. But in the first lap right away the main selection was made with Lucinda Brand and Inge van der Heijden leading the pack and splitting the field.
On lap 2 Brand accelerated but was followed by the European champion and Leonie Bentveld, with Sara Casasola joining the group on lap 3. Bentveld then began to struggle, as some tactical racing began in the Czech Republic between Brand and the two Crelan riders who had to try and outsmart their stronger competitor.
Hence Brand often took the front to avoid being blocked at some point, and in the final lap she would go all-out from early on and she simply rode Casasola off her wheel. Without any specific attack, the Dutchwoman's pace was very high and she was able to create a gap in the final meters of the race, opening up her World Cup run with a victory - she is now leading it as well as the X2O Badkamers Trofee. Casasola finished second and van der Heijden completed the podium.
