Cameron Mason on the hunt for medal at Cyclocross World Championships: "The goal has always been the Worlds"

Cameron Mason has had a roller-coaster season in cyclocross, but his high points were quite high. In the absence of Tom Pidcock, the 23-year old leads the charge for Great Britain at this World Championships' main event.

“The goal has always been the Worlds. I'd like to put myself on that level with those five or six other guys. That's a lot of people in a fight for the medals but that was the case at the European Championships and the other big race," Mason shared with Cyclingnews.

The Briton is a contender for the medal after putting on an impressive set of displays throughout the winter. Whilst struggling with consistency, he found great legs at the European Championships in Pontchâteau where he finished second to only Michael Vanthourenhout.

“I've exposed myself to a full season of cyclocross and I’ve realized that comes the low and the highs... The European Championships was a good example of being in the right place at the right time, and then taking advantage of my own potential and other people's mishaps."

In races such as Boom and Otegem, Mason was only beaten by Joris Niewenhuis and Eli Iserbyt - each having ambitions to finish second, or better if Mathieu van der Poel has a bad day. Mason will find a track in Tabor where he can perform alongside the best. He has prepared for this weekend's event with a great deal of attention and will be looking to take the next step.

“This season has been a kind of breakthrough moment, realising my potential. Next season will be about working out where I can really maximise things and get that extra five percent, to make the difference and win at this level," he concluded.
