The Volta ao Algarve has thus far not gone Team Visma | Lease a Bike's way. Stage 1 was set to be a bunch sprint until the peloton almost fully rode off route with just a few hundred meters to go, and on stage 2 Jonas Vingegaard didn't have the legs to distance his main rivals. Wout van Aert looks to bring the team it's success this Friday afternoon.
“I also plan to sprint today. I was also able to save myself a bit at the end of the stage yesterday. We'll see what happens," van Aert shared with VTM this morning in the Portuguese race. The likes of Jordi Meeus and Biniam Girmay will be his main rivals on the day, but the Belgian has already asserted his intentions.
Stage 1 ended up having no winner, but from today onwards every day is an opportunity for van Aert, who started his 2025 season at the Clasica Jaen Paraiso Interior earlier this week. He hasn't yet achieved a victory, but is looking to do so in order to get the ball rolling towards a spring where he has high ambitions.
However, today he is going to have to contest with pure sprinters on terrain that doesn't quite favour him. “The final is quite easy today, with a very wide road until one and a half kilometres before the finish. That won't be easy for positioning, but it will be crucial today," he describes the finale. "Win? I really want that, yes. But that's always the case, you know.”
