However it wouldn't be as simple as that. Many in fact wouldn't make it to the final sprint, because just inside the final 25 kilometers there was a split in the peloton, and then the tension led to a crash whilst the race was already on. Some crosswinds briefly added to the mix and the peloton was left with a few dozen riders, lacking some of the sprinters.
Uno-X Mobility and INEOS Grenadiers, the teams of the two main favourites for the day, pushed the pace together with a UAE that successfully kept Pavel Sivakov out of the chaos. Uno-X had many men into the final slight ascent, but INEOS pushed the pace to the maximum right from the base.
Ben Turner tried to surprise with an early sprint and the long effort from the Briton almost succeeded. Turner was very close to taking the win, but in the final sprint Kristoff just barely managed to come through and take the triumph.
Maxim van Gils finished third right ahead of
Tom Pidcock.
