Stage 15 of the 2025
Giro d'Italia was a disaster day for
Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe leader
Primoz Roglic. Looking far below the level fans have come to expect of the Slovenian in recent years, the 2023 Maglia Rosa's dream of another Giro d'Italia victory have been left in tatters.
Dropped by all his GC rivals on the final climb of the day, Roglic was even struggling to keep pace with the domestiques tasked with helping him limit losses. As a result, the five-time Grand Tour winner was convincingly distanced at the finishing line, losing exactly a minute and a half to the Maglia Rosa Isaac del Toro, leaving the Slovenian clinging on to his place in the Top-10, now 3:53 down on the Mexican UAE Team Emirates - XRG star in the fight for the overall victory.
Given that Roglic was so surprisingly below the level of all the other general classification contenders, and that he's suffered three crashes in the last week, some have raised the suspicion that there are some bigger underlying issues at play with Roglic's poor performance on stage 15. Because of this, a rumour has been growing that Roglic might even abandon the race on the final rest day.
This topic and the question of where Roglic goes from here was put to Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe by the Slovenian media at the finish line of stage 15.
According to Siol: "A decision is expected tomorrow whether the 35-year-old from Kisovce will be able to continue with the race, which enters a brutal final week on Tuesday with the most difficult stages in the Alps."
So it looks like being a wait and see kind of situation in regards to Roglic's future at the 2025 Giro d'Italia. As always, we'll strive to keep you up to date with any developments.
3 and the race isn’t over yet, must be a record (at least for him), no?
I’d say (apart from any physical damage) that he’s just basically totally fed-up and has lost personal motivation to continue.
Time to Withdraw and reset for Le Tour.
