On the slopes of the fearsome Bola del Mundo, Matthew Riccitello capped a breakthrough Grand Tour with a ride that delivered him not only the white jersey of best young rider, but also a place among the top five in the general classification at the 2025 Vuelta a Espana.
The diminutive American climber produced a performance of grit and composure on the decisive penultimate stage, emerging from the brutal battle with Giulio Pellizzari to secure both his season’s biggest goal and the finest result of his career to date.

“It couldn’t have gone any better”

For Riccitello, this was more than just a result – it was the fulfilment of a long-held ambition. “The white jersey was a goal going into the stage,” he said afterwards. “If it didn’t happen, it had been a good Vuelta up until this point anyway. I went into the stage like I had nothing to lose. It was a really hard day all day, which I think suited me well. [Giulio] Pellizzari has been super strong all race. I think everything went perfect for me today. All I had to do was follow the wheels and hang as long as I could.”
As the race fractured under relentless pressure, Riccitello clung doggedly to the group of favourites. While Jonas Vingegaard was trading blows with João Almeida and Jai Hindley for the stage honours, Riccitello’s quiet strength was enough to tilt the young rider classification decisively in his favour.

Suffering on the Bola del Mundo

The American was candid about the brutality of the final climb, a 6km wall of gradients rarely dipping below double figures. “It was a really tough last climb. When it’s that steep, it’s hard to enjoy,” he admitted. “You just have to go as hard as you can to get up the thing. I definitely suffered a lot in the last couple of kilometres, but you cross the finish line and you forget all the suffering of the last three weeks. It was a really nice day.”
Riccitello’s rise through the race has been steady rather than explosive, but his ability to handle three weeks of attrition at the highest level signals a rider of serious potential. Against the likes of Pellizzari, and other established talents, he showed consistency, patience and, above all, maturity beyond his years. “I’m happy with how the legs have felt these three weeks and this last week in particular,” Riccitello said. “To finish with the white jersey and 5th overall, it couldn’t have gone any better today. I’m really happy.”
As the peloton heads to Madrid for its final parade, Vingegaard will claim the red jersey and the glory of overall victory. But for Riccitello, the 2025 Vuelta a Espana has already been career-defining – the day the world discovered that the quiet American can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the very best.
