Having ridden with Primoz Roglic at Jumbo-Visma between 2018 and 2019, Danny van Poppel was reunited with the Slovenian at BORA - hansgrohe. The Dutchman’s role thus far at the team has been predominantly limited to being a leadout man. However, at Paris-Nice this week he has been mainly working in the service of Roglic, while also getting some opportunities for himself in the sprints.
Roglic’s form has been somewhat lacklustre at Paris-Nice, as he has been unable to compete on the two important stages for the general classification so far, with him losing time to other GC contenders on stages 4 and 6.
However, with the queen stage still yet to come, Van Poppel is confident that Roglic can overturn his deficit in the overall standings, as he said in an interview with Sporza that “we have to catch up, but we all know that the last stage is still super tough, especially with these bad weather conditions. The strongest riders then emerge. Everyone knows what that last day means. Then a minute is not that much”.
