Jordi Meeus came again just a little short to get a stage victory in Volta ao Algarve. The Bora-Hansgrohe rider who clearly seemed to be the fastest in the peloton finished third behind late breakaway members Magnus Cort Nielsen and Filippo Ganna.
"We expected it to be a super fast stage, because the wind was very good in the last hours of the race. But we didn't expect that the group would stay in front of so long, We thought we had caught them just in time after 25 chase kilometres It's always annoying when you get that close but don't win,"said Meeus in the post race interview.
Despite revelling some frustration about the way the stage ended, Meeus is happy with his performance in Volta ao Algarve where he looked like the fastest rider of the peloton. There won't be more chances for him in the last 2 stages but the Bora-hansgrohe is confident that his teammates can secure a victory for the team.
"Still, overall I can be very happy with how the legs are now. Moreover, I am extremely happy that we really have a super-strong team. Still, it is frustrating when you are on the podium so often, but not on the top step.'m. 'We came here with the aim of taking a stage win. We have already come close to it three times, finishing on the podium twice and fifth once. So the goal of winning a stage remains the same.", he concluded.
