“I actually forgot that I’m still eligible for the white jersey,”
Sheffield admitted afterwards in quotes collected by Cycling Pro Net. “I joined the team when I was 19, and now I’m 23, so time goes really fast. With younger and younger riders coming into the sport, it’s nice.”
The collective strength of INEOS Grenadiers in the time trial immediately gave the British team several options for the week ahead.
With Ganna leading the race, Arensman sitting second overall, and Sheffield also placed high in the standings, the team emerged from stage one with multiple riders capable of influencing the general classification.
For Sheffield, that depth means the team can approach the coming stages with an attacking mindset rather than being forced into a defensive strategy. “We can just be aggressive,” he explained. “There’s no need to play defence, so it gives us some nice options.”
The American also pointed to the nature of the
Tirreno-Adriatico route as another factor that could create opportunities for the team during the week. “Especially with the parcours we have here, there aren’t really big mountain-top finishes,” he said. “It should still be very selective, but it’s nice to have multiple options in the general classification.”
Despite the strong opening day for INEOS Grenadiers, Sheffield warned that the race remains wide open with several other teams also bringing serious contenders.
“You could say we’re the team to beat,” he said. “But there are still many strong riders here. Roglic is very strong, and there are also strong riders from Trek and UAE.”
With the first stage completed and the early general classification beginning to take shape, Sheffield’s performance leaves INEOS Grenadiers in a commanding position as Tirreno-Adriatico moves into the first road stages of the week.
