Vuelta a Espana 2026 Classifications Update Stage 9 - Enric Mas strengthens red jersey as Oscar Onley closes on podium

The first red jersey of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana will be decided immediately in Monaco, where a 9.4-kilometre individual time trial opens a race featuring more than 58,000 metres of climbing, repeated summit finishes and a second race against the clock later in the final week.
This live classifications hub will be updated after every stage with the latest General Classification, Points Classification, Mountains Classification and Best Young Rider standings, tracking the fight for the red, green, polka-dot and white jerseys from Stage 1 on August 22 through to the final stage in Granada on September 13.
The overall battle will be shaped by repeated opportunities for the climbers, from the early Pyrenean and Andorran tests to Calar Alto, Sierra de la Pandera, Penas Blancas and the decisive Collado del Alguacil. The two individual time trials and bonus seconds provide further chances for the gaps between the main contenders to change.
Sprint finishes and intermediate sprints will drive the points competition, breakaways can quickly transform the mountains standings and the white jersey will develop alongside many of the same stages that decide the general classification. Each update will show the latest standings after the day's racing and highlight the important changes across all four competitions.

General Classification Standings after Stage 9
Stage 9 gave Enric Mas significantly more breathing room at the top of the Vuelta a Espana standings ahead of the first rest day. The Movistar leader now holds an one minute 18-second advantage over Primoz Roglic, with Felix Gall third at 1:39.
Oscar Onley moved up to fourth after finishing second on the Alto de Aitana and now sits 2:20 behind Mas, while Richard Carapaz and Mattias Skjelmose also gained a place to move fifth and sixth respectively. Sepp Kuss was the biggest loser among the leading contenders, dropping three positions to seventh after conceding 1:44 on the stage and falling to 4:09 overall.
Further down, Jarno Widar climbed two places to 12th after an impressive seventh-place finish, while Cristian Rodriguez also gained two positions and now sits 13th. Mas therefore reaches the rest day with his red jersey strengthened, but Roglic remains within striking distance and the battle behind them is still tightly packed.

Youth Classification Standings after Stage 9
Oscar Onley strengthened his grip on the white jersey with second place on the Alto de Aitana, extending his advantage over Jakob Omrzel to 5:45. Jarno Widar climbed to third at 7:14 after finishing seventh on the stage, while Leo Bisiaux dropped to fourth. Matthew Riccitello also gained a place and now sits fifth in the youth classification.

- Am interested to get more of your insight on what you’re saying. I know from experience and logic that fractures CAN heal stronger (IF properly treated). On the other hand, there are also cases where fractures cannot heal properly and stay weak points or where another fall on a (maybe stronger) fracture creates a more complex fracture adjacent making it more problematic to heal. But my real concern is whether this stronger repairing applies to every type of bone as vertebrae are quite unique in that it isn’t really the bone that matters but the interaction of the ensemble with other parts. Ican even imagine that the change of size and shape of the new material vertebrae can have implications on the very sensitive surrounding tissue and functions. MVDP suffered pain for years that affected his performance though I don’t recall what his exact injuries and protocol were.Jumpyjohn30-08-2026
