The first day of the
Criterium du Dauphiné had some climbing but no-one would've expected the spectacular finale that the riders have provided. The three main contenders to the overall win here and at the Tour de France, together with
Mathieu van der Poel, worked to hold off the peloton.
The first stage had a yellow jersey to award which is of great value - for several riders. After the final steep ascent where Axel Laurance attempted to make the difference, the front of the race came back together and it was
Jonas Vingegaard himself who surprised with a powerful attack on the final little uphill section of the stage.
It was one that took his rivals to the limit, he was followed by
Tadej Pogacar, Mathieu van der Poel and
Santiago Buitrago.
Remco Evenepoel later on joined the group and and quintet would go on to fight for the stage win, where the World Champion came out on top.
