Tadej Pogacar powered to an incredible 5th stage win at the 2024 Giro d'Italia on the summit finish of stage 16. Best of the rest behind though was the prodigiously talented Italian prospect, Giulio Pellizzari.
The 20-year-old of VF Group - Bardiani CSF - Faizanè attacked earlier on the slopes of the climb and was solo heading into the finale. As the 'Jaws' music began to sound though and the Maglia Rosa ominously got closer and closer, with 700m to go, Pogacar caught Pellizzari and soon after was able to power ahead towards the stage win.
After impressively holding off the likes of Daniel Martinez behind though, Pellizzari managed to take himself a second placed finish. Post-stage, as the young climber went over to Pogacar to congratulate the Maglia Rosa, a charming moment ensued as the UAE Team Emirates leader gifted his young rival his set of pink sunglasses and even his stage winning Maglia Rosa.
