With the stage win within reach, the pair had entered the finale in a tense and uneven collaboration, with Evenepoel doing much of the driving.
A crash far more violent than first appeared
From this new angle, the mechanics of the fall are stark. Rather than sliding out or losing grip in a corner, Evenepoel’s bike appears to stop suddenly, sending him straight over the front in one motion. It is the kind of crash more commonly associated with hitting a pothole or sudden surface defect than any racing error.
The footage shows just how little time he had to react. There is little attempt to brace or correct, only a rapid forward rotation and heavy impact with the road.
Given the speed and positioning, the outcome could easily have been far worse. High-speed over-the-bars crashes often lead to fractures or head injuries, yet Evenepoel was able to remount and finish the stage, escaping with abrasions despite the severity of the fall.

Missed opportunity after bold move with Vingegaard
The timing of the crash only adds to its significance. Evenepoel had animated the stage with a long-range attack, quickly joined by Vingegaard as the two favourites briefly worked together ahead of a fractured peloton.
That move had the potential to reshape the general classification early in the race. Instead, it ended abruptly within sight of the finish, with Vingegaard sitting up after the crash and the peloton returning to contest the stage, eventually won by Dorian Godon.
Although Evenepoel did not lose time on general classification due to the timing of the incident inside the final kilometres, the crash cost him a major opportunity both for the stage and for early psychological advantage over his rival.
This newly surfaced footage reframes the incident entirely. What had been seen as an unfortunate late crash now looks like a high-speed ejection caused by a sudden interruption to the bike’s momentum, and a moment where Evenepoel was, in many ways, fortunate to walk away.
