Stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya has delivered perhaps the most possibly unexpected finale that could've realistically happened.
Remco Evenepoel and
Jonas Vingegaard looked to be on the way to stage victory at the end of a stage that was only attacked on the flat roads, but the
Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe crashed already inside the final kilometer.
The duo moved away from the peloton in a windy area inside the final 30 kilometers and worked together to build a gap over the peloton. Emotions were running high as Evenepoel demanded more work from Vingegaard during the unexpected two-man attack, but no-one would've expected the outcome of the move.
The two seemed to be taking the opportunity right from the sprinters' hands, until they did not. Evenepoel crashed only with a few meters to go on the stage, in the final roundabout. A very unusual crash, one that Jonas Vingegaard himself admitted in a post-race interview to not know how exactly it happened.
Evenepoel fell right before reaching the roundabout, and this led to Vingegaard then getting caught in the very finishing straight of the stage. The crash happened with the helicopter footage not focusing on the front group, leading to the shocking image of Evenepoel on the ground and bloodied. He does not seem initially to have sustained fractures but the amount of blood, road rash and torn equipment indicates that he fell harshly, which may come as a large obstacle towards his run for the overall classification in the race. Due to the 3-kilometer rule, he has not lost time on the day however.
The upcoming stages will be crucial for the overall classification but above all, would be Evenepoel's big climbing test after a UAE Tour in which his performances were disappointing on the climbs. It is uncertain if he will be at his regular level over the upcoming days.
