The brilliant
Rasmus Tiller took his second
Dwars door het Hageland victory in three years. With pre-race favourite,
Mathieu van der Poel seeing a puncture rule him out of contention with 20km to go however, Tiller describes himself as "lucky."
“I had good legs and I felt pretty good during the race. The team did a really good job, they kept me at the front," says the 26-year-old Norwegian in his post-race interview. “I was pretty confident when we got into that group. Of course, van der Poel had a flat tire. That was sad for him because if he's not there, it's easier. We were lucky that he had a puncture. But I am very happy.”
Tiller emerged victorious despite the fact he was outnumbered by three Soudal - Quick-Step riders towards the end. “It is difficult when a team has several riders in front. We also had Søren Wærenskjold but he had a flat tire. After that I was alone. Of course that is difficult," explains Tiller. "But at the same time they had to ride because the peloton was chasing us. Perhaps Lampaert was the strongest of the three. But I was lucky to be in the front.”
“The gravel was very dry and therefore quite slippery. In addition, it was quite warm. Last year it was also warm here, but I think it was even warmer this time," continued the
Uno-X Pro Cycling Team rider. "That made it even harder. It was important to eat and drink well. We had people everywhere with water bottles and everything we needed. I am very happy to finish it for the team."
