On the day before turning 42 years of age, Alejandro Valverde will return to a race that has marked his career heavily, as he sets out in chase of a fifth Liège-Bastogne-Liège win, a feat that is a big possibility after the veteran's impressive performance at Flèche Wallone where he's finished second.
After a disappointing performance at the Volta a Catalunya where he abandoned without getting any meaningful result, there were big question marks over the Spaniard's form heading into the Ardennes. However, he was the closest competitor to Dylan Teuns on the Mur de Huy, which must've came as a big boost to Valverde's motivation heading into La Doyenne.
He has experience on his side, aswell as the endurance which has been a trademark in his skillset. He will too have strong team support, most noticeably from Enric Mas who can aswell be a dangerous rider for the race's outcome, after showing great form these past few weeks.
As for Valverde, with wins under his belt at Trofeo Pollença and Gran Camiño already this season, alongside a second place at Strade Bianche, shows that he is in no ways out of run for big wins despite this being his final season on the road.
Movistar Team: Alejandro Valverde, Enric Mas, Carlos Verona, Oier Lazkano, Gregor Mühlberger, Gorka Izagirre and Lluís Mas.
