Tour de Suisse 2024 stage 4 GC Update: Adam Yates leads UAE Team Emirates 1-2 from Joao Almeida

Stage 4 of the Tour of Switzerland 2024 promised to be the first big battle for the general classification as it was the first day of high mountains. In the end, the big winner of the day was Adam Yates despite Torstein Traeen holding on for the stage win from the breakaway.

The UAE Team Emirates rider did not hesitate to attack from the peloton in search of the stage victory, although it finally went to Traeen. But at least it served him to wear yellow, succeeding Alberto Bettiol who lost it after the EF Education-EasyPost rider was dropped on the final climb of the stage, being unable to keep up with the pace of the peloton.

The Top 3 is completed by the yellow jersey's UAE Team Emirates teammate, Joao Almeida, 26 seconds behind, and defending Tour de Suisse champion, Mattias Skjelmose, 3rd, with the same time difference. Egan Bernal, for his part, showed good legs on the final climb, and managed to move into the 4th overall position, 49 seconds behind the leader, Yates.

The rest of the Top 10 is completed by the following riders: Wilco Kelderman is 5th, 1 minute and 15 seconds behind Adam Yates, despite suffering a crash on the final climb. Oscar Onley is 6th, 1 minute and 17 seconds behind the leader; Enric Mas 7th, Cian Uijtdebroeks is the second Visma in the Top 10 with his 8th place; Matthew Riccitello gives Israel - Premier Tech a presence in the top ranks with his 9th place; and Felix Gall of Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale completes the overall Top 10 after stage 4.

As expected, Adam Yates was the strongest today on Gotthardpass and gained important time on all of his GC rivals. He's now the Yellow Jersey and favourite to win this bike race. #TDS2024
