Tour de Suisse 2024 stage 2 GC Update: Yves Lampaert holds onto Maillot Jaune; two UAE in the Top 5

After his victory in the short time-trial on stage 1, Yves Lampaert has kept a hold of the Maillot Jaune at the 2024 Tour de Suisse on stage 2. Although the day was decided by a final sprint, changes were still expected in the top 10 of the overall classification and that's largely how things worked out.

The stage winner was Bryan Coquard. The Cofidis sprinter won the final sprint ahead of Michael Matthews and Arnaud de Lie after the peloton caught the breakaway 10 km from the finish, just at the end of the Regensberg climb. This result meant that Yves Lampaert kept the yellow jersey for at least one more day, an achievement already for the Soudal Quick-Step rider.

From here is where we start to see the changes. Stefan Bissegger loses his 2nd position and drops out of the Top 10 after today's stage as he didn't make it in time with the peloton to the final sprint. This leaves Ethan Hayter as provisional 2nd overall, 4 seconds behind Lampaert. In the same way, Joao Almeida enters the provisional podium, now 3rd, seven seconds behind the yellow jersey.

Returning to the Top 10 of the general classification, UAE Team Emirates has Finn Fisher-Black 4th next to Almeida. Michael Matthews moves up to 5th position thanks to his 2nd place in the final sprint. Samuel Watson is 6th, 9 seconds off the lead. Alberto Bettiol is 7th after his attack 2 km from the finish was unsuccessful. Stefan Kung is 8th, Mauro Schmid 9th and Soren Kragh Andersen closes the Top 10.
