Tom Dumoulin did not really understand what
Wout van Aert was doing in the tenth stage of the Tour de France. The Dutch former professional stated in an interview for NOS that his old teammate from
Jumbo-Visma made many very strange choices.
"The Tour is halfway and so far I couldn't catch Wout making a mistake. He is super strong, has not yet won a stage, but is the strongest rider in this Tour. He climbs, he descends, he sprints, it's not normal," Dumoulin starts very positively.
After that there is some room for criticism. "Today, however, I didn't understand his tactics at all and neither did Jumbo-Visma's in that respect."
"He probably had a free role, otherwise I really can't explain what he was doing," continues the 2017 Giro winner. "He's doing a good job, but his tactics just weren't smart. He is the best rider in the race, he has the best credentials to win a stage like today, but the best doesn't always win. Then you have to race smart and he didn't do that today to be honest."
