Danny van Poppel has had opportunities of his own, however this year's move to BORA - hansgrohe saw him turn into a premium leadout man, who at the
European championships proved to be a key card in Fabio Jakobsen's win.
“It's not just my job, it's the team's as well," van Poppel said at the end of the day after the Dutch team's win. Boy [van Poppel, his brother] sat in front of me and coached the other boys well. We were also able to speak Dutch, which is nice.”
The Dutch team controlled the day, and had their resources pointed towards the final kilometers. Van Poppel described: “In the last straight, Merlier started, but much too early. Then I thought, what should I do now? I turned on and off so that Fabio could get out of the slipstream".
Jakobsen didn't wait for van Poppel's move, instead launching his own sprint at the perfect time, flying into the win. "Very cool, very cool. This was the goal and it worked. Especially if he wins, it's perfect. Fabio is the deserved European champion," the BORA rider commented. Under the radar, van Poppel still went on to finish fourth place, directly in front of his own teammate Sam Bennett.
“We have been in the room together. There we agreed on some things, because it takes some getting used to. For example, Sam Bennett stays in my wheel, while Fabio chooses his own way, after which we find each other in the last line," he described. "I already did some good lead outs this year. Then you get a lot of praise. For me it's just a win".
