"First of all I would like to say; Thanks God for everything! Thanks for giving me all the strength and support," reflects a visibly emotional Girmay in his post-stage interview. "Since I started cycling, the
Tour de France was everything. I never dreamed I'd be part of the Tour de France but now, yeah I can't believe it. To win at the Tour de France in my second year, a big bunch sprint, it is just unbelievable."
One of the most well supported riders in the entirety of the peloton, Girmay's win is one sure to bring a smile to many faces. Given his immense support however, the 24-year-old Eritrean had a lot of people to thank. "I want to thank my family and my wife, all the Eritrean and African fans, we must be proud because now we are really part of the big races. We have had a lot of big victories and now, this is our time and our moment. I am super happy!"
"This means so much. This win is for all Africans I would say," concludes Girmay, as he once again starts to visibly tear up. "I am just so happy today."
