In 2024, Tadej Pogacar put in one of the greatest individual seasons in cycling history. As such, the Slovenian has been drawing comparisons with the great Eddy Merckx of late. According to Jens Voigt though, not Pogacar but someone else stands out as Merckx heir in the peloton.
"The next person that comes to mind is Marianne Vos," explains the 43-year-old German in his reflections of the 2024 season for Eurosport. "If ever an athlete, or in this case a female athlete, deserved the attribute "GOAT" - alongside Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan or Eddy Merckx - then it is the Dutchwoman."
Adding 7 victories to her palmares in 2024, including notable successes such as Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Dwars door Vlaanderen, Amstel Gold Race and two stages of the Vuelta a Espana, the 37-year-old's career victory tally now stands at the incredibly impressive number of 255 on the road alone. And with triumphs across multiple disciplines increasing her overall tally much higher, Voigt sees Vos as the true heir of Merckx in modern cycling.
"In the spring she won Dwars door Vlaanderen convincingly, which was her 250th victory (!) and there were a few more to come in the rest of the season. She is a two-time Olympic champion and fourteen-time world champion: on the road, on the track, in cross and in gravel," Voigt, himself a rider with 59 career victories, concludes. "There has probably not been a cyclist since Merckx who has had such a long and successful career, so one of my highlights this year was seeing Vos return to winning ways."
Excitingly, Vos might not yet be done in 2024. After nearly two years away from cyclocross, the eight-time world champion is set to return to the field on Sunday in Besancon, potentially working towards the Cyclocross World Championships in early 2025.

There is a cyclist, recently retired who raced as a Junior in 1997, and is known as 'The Goat'.
Downhill legend, Greg Minnaar......

He may be known as “The goat” but I can’t realistically consider him a top ten candidate taking together all forms of cycling.

Vos had 28 UCI WC wins, Absalon 33, Schurter 34, MVDP 41 and counting. As far as world championships they are all ahead too
Longo, MVDP, PFP, Merckx, de Vlaeminck, TP and at least a half dozen others from long ago are surely higher up, or what criteria are you privileging other than a nickname?

A wonderful rider and I’m really glad to read that Voigt champions her. She’s been a rider of such dominance for so long that people seem to forget, except how can you after such a long and illustrious career?

Well, perhaps we still consider sport* to be more of a men’s thing? * I have to say that watching my partner at her badminton club that seems to be one of the rare sports where a more balanced attitude is ambivalent, perhaps because most prefer to play mixed doubles at that level and it’s a very social sport at club level and each match type has equal weighting towards a tournament total?

It is so awesome that Voit called attention to Voss' accomplishments. It is simply the fact of her remarkable ability that puts her in the class of Merckx

Hey, kudos to him but sorry, he’s also showing a complete lack of real sport awareness. He speaks of GOATS then tries to equate everything but at the same time ignoring whatever he’s not interested in. So basically he’s trying to promote cycling to the level of a megasports and demote every other sport to a lesser level by not mentioning anyone considered a GOAT in minor sports.
Showing a real interest in sport or GOATs should be a prerequisite to lumping together arbitrarily but, yes she is definitely a cycling GOAT and yet, I’d hesitate to place her above Jeannie Longo, I mean we’re talking 38 world records, 4 Olympic medals including one gold, 26 WC medals including 13 golds, 3 Tdff wins, twice 2nd, 23 stage wins plus countless others for a grand total of 1157 wins! And yet, she’s hardly EVER mentioned. As for other total dominators in sport, (An)Toni Bou, another complete unknown.

Yes, Jeannie Longo.. another GREAT, great cyclist. Got to
see her race a few times in Chicago where I was racing, mostly. So unbelievably fit when standing next to her competition. With all the doping accusations around that time I only hope it wasn't true for her as well.

The road bias of this site shows up as PFP isn't mentioned - who is as successful as Vos, and from memory has more World titles.

Mistermaumau 30 December 2024 at 20:18+ 3501

Not quite yet I’d say but she could reach and surpass.
You probably forgot Vos’ 2 track WC titles that outweigh the total and it has to be said more of PFPs MTB titles are a bit far fetched than Vos but yes they are comparable.
It’s strange that with her consistent participation in xc she’s never ever managed to win even one race, Marie Schreiber can at least retire with that achievement ;-)
