Tadej Pogacar's unfortunate crash at the Vuelta a Espana on Saturday continues to stir debate, with one analyst believing that a loss of focus led to the crash and that it could have been avoided.
The UAE Team Emirates - XRG leader crashed out of the Vuelta while in commanding lead of the general classification. Dominating the red jersey race by over three minutes after a week of racing, he appeared to strike a stone on the road and lose control of his bike.
The resulting fall saw him come over the handlebars and break his collarbone, his vertebrae and sustain a concussion and nasty lacerations to his face, hands and arms. The immediate aftermath saw a dazed Pogacar try to get back on the bike before quickly accepting that his race was over.
Analyst Stef Clement described the sudden nature of the crash, noting how it happened in an instant and that t wasn't a predictable thing.
"If you get tapped from behind, your front wheel doesn't suddenly go the other way," Clement said on the NOS cycling podcast.

Pogacar's unexpected Vuelta crash

"You see some crashes coming one or two seconds in advance. This is really boom, knocked away, onto your face. Everything you do after that is in a kind of daze."
The unexpected nature of the crash symbolises one of the hidden dangers of riding a Grand Tour - riders have to stay alert to the dangers for three whole weeks. Clement believes Pogacar's domination of the race enabled an overconfidence to take hold and perhaps concentration to wain.
"And therein lies a danger. You then only seek opposition within yourself. Pogacar only losing to himself. There was a certain overconfidence involved.
"We have often called him the playboy. But if you don't have serious competition, how can you maintain the focus that is actually needed?"

Did Pogacar lose focus?

Clement believes that Pogacar's commanding lead ultimately led to his reduced focus, noting that the stone was avoided by others in the peloton.
"And the first one to hit it is Tadej Pogacar. What I mean by that is: if you are so much better than the rest, are you focused enough to handle all the dangers lurking around? Or is he just that little bit less focused, which can cost you at such a stupid moment as today?"
Pogacar's first major crash in over three years, Clement worries that it could be a difficult challenge for the Slovenian and that he will face question marks after he returns from his injuries.
"Last year in the Tour he got away with it, but that is not the case now. Is this a turning point in his career? We will only know that when he returns," Clement wondered.
