One of the most successful Frenchman in the modern era of the Tour de France, Julian Alaphilippe returns to his home Grand Tour in 2025, and this time, in the colours of a team other than Soudal - Quick-Step, having the left 'The Wolfpack' for the Tudor Pro Cycling Team.
Six stage wins, a polka-dot jersey, and one of the most memorable Tour de France campaigns of the modern era in 2019, Alaphilippe's place in the history books of the Tour de France is secured. This time though, the 33-year-old has a point to prove.
“The first week offers plenty of opportunities for riders like me, for Marc Hirschi, and for all the punchers in the peloton. But it’s also going to be incredibly tense — especially with the GC riders fighting for position and the risk of crosswinds from stage one," Alaphilippe previews in quotes collected by Cyclism'Actu. "That’s all part of the Tour, though, and I can’t complain. I’m genuinely happy with the parcours this year, especially the opening week, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
The signing of Alaphilippe has been seen by many as a major part of Tudor receiving their first ever wildcard to the biggest race on the calendar. The former world champion himself however, is keen to stress that his selection is based solely on sporting merits, rather than any potentially political ramifications. “I’m not on this Tour team because of anything I’ve done," he says. "We’ve ridden well as a group since the start of the season — and that’s not thanks to me, because I haven’t won anything yet. So I think that debate can be put to bed. I’m just motivated to ride a good Tour and to give everything for the team.”
As for his goals for this year, a similar effort as in 2019 is unlikely, but Alaphilippe can still dream. “The yellow jersey? Of course, that’s still a dream. That never changes," he smiles. "But it’s the Tour — you take it day by day.”
“I’ve felt really good since joining the team. I won’t say I’ve rediscovered the joy of racing — because I never lost it — but being in a new set-up and part of this new project has really inspired me. And I think the results have justified that motivation from the start of the season,” concludes the French star. “It feels fantastic to be part of this team and to feel the way I do now. Being here at the Tour with Tudor is something everyone — riders, staff, sponsors — can be proud of. It’s a huge moment for the team, and we’re all eager to show off the jersey and give it everything. That drives me too.”
