One of the races of the Challenge Mallorca this past week, the Trofeo Andratx, did not go all the way as the riders decided to stop amidst safety concerns. Dozens of riders fell in the first kilometers due to the wet conditions and slippery roads, and the chaos that ensured led riders to implement the decision themselves. Head of the CPA Adam Hansen, who works to ensure change in the sport, is livid with the situation that enrolled in Spain.
"The start of today’s race was chaotic. The road was completely slippery due to the rain, leading to numerous crashes. All medical services were occupied assisting multiple riders, with some even being evacuated to the hospital," Hansen said in a statement shared on social media in the aftermath of the race. "... Today, after the start of the race, heavy rain created hazardous road conditions, resulting in more than ten crashes across multiple areas, involving over 50 riders. Given that the slippery roads continued to pose a significant risk, the riders realized that the situation would persist unless an alternative solution was implemented".
The race was called off, much to the criticism of the race director Manuel Hernandez himself "We respect the decision of the racers. We do not share it, neither we nor the jury. We didn't like at all that the organization had no say in this decision. It seems to us a lack of respect towards us, since a lot of money has been spent". The backlash of the organizer further fueled the fire on a situation where the grand majority sided with the riders' decisions, and the truth is even Hansen's statements had backlash. In a statement issued this Tuesday the Australian did not hold himself back:
"How many deaths have occurred among race organizers in recent years? I dont mean the death of a company-I mean the death of an individual. Ive never heard of a single 1. Maybe you can enlighten me? Now, deaths of cyclists in road races have been far too many for my liking," he argues. "Maybe you think it’s acceptable to take risks & gamble with someone’s life, but I do not".
"The rising number of deaths will kill the sport in the long run," he claims, with strong words. "I take a long-term perspective rather than focusing on just a one race today. If we want to keep fans—especially those who ride their bikes, dream of becoming pros, or even just participate in local events—we must ensure that cycling is safe for everyone. If its not safe for the pros, who should be the best bike handlers, then its not safe for anyone".
