Remember when
Mathieu van der Poel pulled off wheelies on
the climbs during the 2022 Giro d’Italia? Now, the rider some are calling his
heir has followed suit.
Tibor Del Grosso (like Van der Poel) has a background in
cyclocross and boasts exceptional bike-handling skills. The Dutchman has won
the U23 rainbow jersey two years in a row in cyclocross and continues to
impress with his flair on the bike.
On Saturday, during the
Amstel Gold Race for spectators, Del Grosso showed
off his talents in spectacular style to the fans roadside. On the Eyserbosweg, certainly
not the easiest climb in the race, he rode up on just one wheel.
Yes, he was doing a wheelie!
The 21-year-old, who is in his first year with the
Alpecin-Deceuninck senior team and is a teammate of Van der Poel, took on
sections of the 17% gradient climb with just his rear wheel on the ground.
Del Grosso is expected to line up at the start of the Tour
of Turkey next Sunday. He also is the current Dutch cyclocross champion, and he
came 6th at Dwars door Vlaanderen and 10th at Brabantse
Pjil.
A show off, some may call him. But it is clear Alpecin have
another supremely talented rider on their books, and one with superb bike
handling too.
