After finishing sixth overall at O Gran Camiño with a third place finish on the final stage to Tui on Monte Aloia behind Jonas Vingegaard and Lenny Martinez, Hugh Carthy has begun the season with good form, which he will look to carry into his next few races ahead of his main objective of the season at the Giro d’Italia.
In an interview with Cyclingnews during O Gran Camiño, Carthy set out his schedule for the season, stating that “I’ll be doing Catalunya, Alps, and the Giro, it’s a similar program to other years so I’m happy with that”.
Carthy has ridden six of the last seven editions of the Giro d’Italia, so he is well-placed to comment on the difficulty of this year’s race, as he said “the Giro is the big goal. It’s not so mountainous as other years but it’s always hard. It doesn’t take so much to make differences in the second and third weeks. The course isn’t less hard than normal, there are less mountains, but it’s not less hard”.
The EF Education-EasyPost rider’s best finish at La Corsa Rosa was eighth overall in 2021 and he will be hoping to improve on his previous results at this year’s race, with fellow British climber Simon Carr set to be riding in support of him.
