On paper, the stage 11 of 2026 Giro d'Italia was made for a breakaway. Placed just a day after a key 42-kilometer time trial, there was no chance any of the GC favourites would be willing exert an excessive effort with little to gain, despite the undulating parcours. But if you expected the peloton to take another rest day and stroll along the Italian coast at a leisurely pace 10 or more minutes behind a large group of escapees, you couldn't be more wrong.
Many groups went up the road in the first hours of the stage, but none was able to gain a clear advantage as a stage marked "breakaway day" was a muleta (torreador's red flag) for all the teams which were searching was an individual success. And with several categorized climbs spread across the second half of the stage, it was important to keep escaped groups at bay on the first 75 flat kilometers.
Chris Harper was always part of these groups, and was ultimately rewarded with a fourth place on the day, losing to Diego Ulissi in a sprint for last podium spot as Jhonatan Narvaez and Enric Mas steered clear off the group on last climb of the day.
"For me, it was incredibly tough; it felt like another time trial," Harper described today's exahustive breakaway formation. "Getting into the breakaway wasn't easy, and even when we were in a good group, we couldn't create a significant gap for a while. We kept hearing about riders trying to make a jump, so it was a real battle all day."
"Regarding the finale, Enric Mas attacked once, and I didn't have the legs to follow him. I managed to get back into the rhythm because every time the gradient eased, they eased off a bit. But I was completely exhausted, and as soon as the road steepened again, he attacked once more, and I simply didn't have the legs to go with him," he said

New GC contender?

Although it was hardly Harper's objective today, he managed to jump up seven positions and has entered a top-10 in the general classification thanks to his effort, as he gained three minutes on peloton. Harper now sits 4:09 behind pink jersey Afonso Eulálio.

"The GC contenders aren't too worried about me. With all the big mountain stages coming up, that's where the big gaps will be created. For me, it's fantastic to gain back three minutes. Now, it's about recovering well, especially since the first big test is this Saturday. I'm going to try to recover as much as possible to see what I can do in the mountains."
"In the general classification, whether I'm four minutes down or whatever, I'm aiming for any result. Every day, I want to give my best. If I'm in the breakaway, I'm going for the stage win, but you can also be opportunistic and gain time, like I did today. I'm not saying I'm going to be at the front every day; we'll see how the race unfolds, but gaining those three minutes is excellent."
