The
UAE Team Emirates - XRG crashed on stage 2 of the Giro, after teammate Marc Soler went down in a moment of high-speed descending on one of the Bulgarian stages. Vine suffered a fractured elbow and also a concussion. Two weeks after the crash, he is already allowed to train outside.
"The elbow has also progressed a lot quicker than the old scaphoid did, which has meant I’ve been able to get back out for some easy rides outdoors already," he informs.
Earlier in the season the Australian won the Tour Down Under but suffered a crash on the final day, colliding with a kangaroo, which left him with a fractured scaphois. His return to racing at the Volta a Catalunya saw him crash out once again. Vine has started three stage-races this year and has suffered three major setbacks on each of them.
Patience wears thin after another major setback
This is something that takes a toll on the 30-year old, who continues to have his career riddled with injuries, which do not allow him to build momentum and consistent form. "Not going to lie, this year has been a tough one mentally. Every time things start building in the right direction, another setback seems to pop up, and when a lot of it is completely out of your control it definitely wears thin".
However into the summer, Vine will not be having cycling as the absolute priority, as he will soon welcome his second child. "But nothing changes there — Team Vine is fully behind me, helping work through it all and plan the next steps forward. For now though, the focus is at home with Bre getting very close to her due date. Baby number two will be taking top priority over the next little while".
There is no return date to racing, however it is possible that Vine will - if health allows - be selected to race the Vuelta a España, close to where he lives, in Andorra, and a race where over the past few years he has performed very well - winning the KOM classification in the past two editions.
"Also appreciate all the messages and well wishes over the past few weeks. Doesn’t go unnoticed," he concluded.
