After completing the best year in cycling history in 2024, many might think that Tadej Pogacar has little left to do in his career. However, at just 26 years old, the sky is the limit for the UAE Team Emirates star and there are plenty goals that may pop up later in his career.
In collaboration with CiclismoAlDia, we have explored this question. In addition to the fact that he has yet to win some of the most mythical races of the cycling season, such as the Vuelta a España, Milano-Sanremo or Paris-Roubaix, Pogacar has several historic records in his sights that he could break in the near future.
In the Tour de France 2024, Tadej Pogacar won his third title after sweeping an edition where he took 6 stage victories. The all-time record is 8, held by Eddy Merckx, Charles Pélissier and Freddy Maertens. It seems that, as he continues to grow as a cyclist, the Slovenian will break that record sooner rather than later.
Tadej Pogacar currently holds 2 Liège-Bastogne-Liège titles. It is worth remembering that he could have more. In 2022 he did not race due to the death of his mother-in-law, and in 2023, when he was favorite to win, he suffered a fall that caused his injury. The best historical record is held by Eddy Merckx, with 5 victories in this monument. As there is no one who can come close to Pogacar in this race, if the Slovenian's luck smiles on him, it won't be long before he overtakes the Belgian legend.
In 2024, Tadej Pogacar opened his personal tally of World Championship wins. With a historic performance, the Slovenian took his first rainbow jersey by attacking 100 kilometers from the finish line. Peter Sagan, Rik van Steenbergen, Oscar Freire, Alfredo Binda and Eddy Merckx hold the overall record with three victories. The UAE Team Emirates' star has stated that the World Championships in Rwanda 2025 will be one of his main objectives. If he wins it, he would be already 2 and only 27 years old.
Pogacar closed this last season with his fourth Il Lombardia title. The Slovenian tied Alfredo Binda. But he still has to beat Fausto Coppi, who currently holds the record in the classic of the dead leaves, with 5 victories. This is one of the records that the Slovenian is most likely to beat in the short term.
To have won the Tour de France 3 times at only 26 years of age is a real achievement. Even more so considering that the absolute record is set at 5 titles, something that Miguel Induráin, Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault achieved at the time.
